42nd Street
Current Status
- Pump station repairs are ongoing, and residents and visitors may notice increased activity in the coming weeks, including returning the station to the power grid, the removal of a damaged pump, and work to the exterior of the pump station at street level.
- As permanent pumps are brought back online, temporary pumps and generators will be removed.
- The City continues to work closely with the US Army Corps of Engineers to ensure ongoing compliance with all statutes and regulations.
- Pedestrian access to and from the beach at 42nd Street may continue to be limited for several months. Do not jump/move barricades, the area of the pump station is closed to the public to ensure everyone remains safe.
- The pump station is expected to be back to full capacity mid-summer, with all work to be completed in early 2027.
Over the weekend of Jan. 24, 2026, a water service line break caused flooding and damage to the underground control room at the 42nd Street pump station at the Oceanfront. Some temporary hoses and pumps remain on the beach to allow stormwater to be pumped out to the ocean, as the oceanfront drainage system is designed to function.
While the water that flooded the control room was contaminated by diesel during the flooding, it was contained to the control room and has since been removed and is being professionally treated for disposal. No stormwater was contaminated, and no contaminated water was released into the environment.
Regulatory agencies have been notified and are aware of the situation. Damage assessment and repair planning are ongoing, and additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
