Landfills are engineered facilities built to systematically bury waste and are highly permitted and monitored. They are the oldest and most common form of waste disposal. The Landfill and Resource Recovery Center is positioned to be a long-term resource for the City of Virginia Beach and its residents.

In addition to the landfill cells where trash is placed, compacted, and covered daily, the facility also:

  • Collects methane gas that is produced by decomposing waste to be converted into a renewable energy source.
  • Complies with multiple permits and regulations including those for stormwater management, runoff, groundwater, and gas monitoring.
  • Controls dust, odors, and fly away litter by utilizing spray trucks, daily cover, and fencing.
  • Houses the City’s Resource Recovery Center which diverts materials from the landfill for alternative disposal or use.
  • Houses the City’s household hazardous waste facility which properly and safely disposes of toxic, corrosive, ignitable, or reactive materials.
  • Recycles materials from the Resource Recovery Center like concrete, tree limbs, and tires into crushed concrete, mulch, and shredded rubber to be used in a variety of projects!

Fun Fact! The City’s first landfill was converted into the Mount Trashmore Park which opened in 1973! It is now a popular recreational facility boasting picnic shelters, playground areas, walking trails, and more!
