Current Status & Next Steps

Design is underway and scheduled to be complete by June 2026. This project is funded by the Southern Rivers Watershed Capital Improvement Project (CIP) 100391.

Purpose of the Project

Based on water quality testing date, the upper North Landing River has low dissolved oxygen, which harms aquatic life. This project will improve nearby ditches to reduce stormwater pollutants being discharged into the waterway.

The improvements are adjacent to the parking areas at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex. The project supports the implementation of the City’s Local Phosphorus Total Maximum Daily Load Action Plan.

How the Project Achieves Purpose

Four drainage ditches will be upgraded to wet swales, which improve water quality by removing sediment and nutrients from stormwater runoff through features such as:

  • Rock check dams and mild slopes– to slow down the flow of stormwater and collect sediment and nutrients.
  • Wetland vegetation – to absorb nutrients.
