There are many opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle in Virginia Beach and beyond! Check out Earth911’s recycling search to see a list of locations and businesses that participate in alternative recycling and what types of materials they accept.

Battery Recycling

Lithium ion (Li-On), rechargeable batteries, and nickel-cadmium batteries (Ni-Cd or NiCad) batteries cannot go in the trash and must be properly disposed of. The Landfill and Resource Recovery Center does accept these types of batteries.

Please dispose of alkaline batteries in your trash. Alkaline Batteries no longer contain mercury and are composed primarily of common metals like steel, zinc, and manganese which do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal. The City does not accept alkaline batteries for recycling.

Electronics Recycling (E-Cycling)

Before donating or recycling, make sure to delete all personal information from your electronics and remove any batteries as they may need to be recycled separately. The Landfill and Resource Recovery Center does accept electronics for e-cycling (with the exception of anything with a cathode-ray tube (CRT)).

Check with the manufacturers or local retailers to see if they offer electronic recycling. Some will direct you to drop-off locations and others may offer to provide you with a postage paid shipping label to send it to a recycler.

Check the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) site for more information on electronics donation and recycling.

Plastic Film Recycling

Grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, re-sealable bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, salt bags, and cereal bags that are dry and free of food residue can be recycled at participating retailers and grocery stores!
