Project Status

Current Status & Next Steps

Construction started in March 2024. The constructed wetland area has been excavated. 90% of the new storm piping has been installed. The wooden walkway to the floating dock has been installed. The remainder of the project, including installation of the floating dock, the gangway from the walkway to the floating dock, parking lot, picnic shelter, and final grading of the constructed wetland is anticipated to be completed by May. This project is funded by Capital Improvement Project (CIP) 100161.

Purpose of the Project

The benefits to the receiving channel’s ecosystem includes:

  • Reduced debris.
  • Reduced roadway pollutants.
  • Reduced algae-encountering nutrients flowing into the Elizabeth River.

Additionally, this project will contribute to the City’s requirement under the Chesapeake Bay total maximum daily load.

How the Project Achieves Purpose

This project will direct stormwater along Princess Anne Road through an underground water quality improvement structure, which will remove trash, sediment, and phosphorus. This flow is then directed through a constructed wetland that captures additional sediment and debris, as well as removing phosphorus and nitrogen before it drains into the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River.
