Current Status & Next Steps

Construction of the project is scheduled for completion in September 2025. This project is funded by Capital Improvement Project (CIP) 100161.

Purpose of the Project

The project will direct stormwater along Princess Anne Road through an underground system that cleans the water by removing trash, dirt and phosphorus. From there, the water moves through a man-made wetland that traps more dirt and debris, and also reduces phosphorus and nitrogen.

After being cleaned, the water drains into the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River.

The benefits to the ecosystem include:

  • Reduced debris.
  • Reduced roadway pollutants.
  • Reduced algae-encountering nutrients flowing into the Elizabeth River.

This project also helps Virginia Beach meet state rules for keeping the Chesapeake Bay clean.
